# Why Your Mouth Tastes Like Metal
It turns up before a period, in early pregnancy, and again in perimenopause. Three different life stages, one shared explanation.
A metallic or bitter taste with no obvious source is disconcerting, partly because there is nothing to point at. Nothing looks wrong. Food simply tastes like coins.
At ELEV8 Beverly Hills Biological Dentistry, it is one of the symptoms that best illustrates why we treat the mouth as part of the endocrine system rather than separately from it.
Taste is not purely a function of your tongue. It depends on saliva, on the tissue lining your mouth, and on nerve signaling, and estrogen and progesterone influence all three.
When those hormones shift, three things can change at once:
The medical term is dysgeusia. It is real, it is measurable, and it is not something you are inventing.
Before your period. Progesterone rises in the days beforehand, and for some women taste shifts alongside the gum tenderness. Typically resolves once the period begins.
In early pregnancy. One of the more commonly reported early symptoms, often alongside nausea and food aversions. Usually strongest in the first trimester and easing after.
In perimenopause and menopause. Frequently paired with dry mouth and sometimes with a burning tongue. Less saliva means fewer flavour molecules reaching your receptors, and a metallic or bitter note is a common result.
Around puberty. Less often discussed, but the same mechanism applies when hormones first surge.
The pattern across all four is the same. Hormones change, saliva changes, taste changes.
Not every metallic taste is hormonal, and the honest version of this article says so.
If your gums are also bleeding, start there rather than assuming hormones.
This is exactly why Dr. Leedia built care around a woman’s hormonal life rather than around a single procedure list.
A metallic taste at fourteen, at thirty-four, and at fifty-four is not three unrelated complaints. It is one mechanism at three points on the same arc, and the care should recognize that.
Our Comprehensive Wellness Exam is ninety minutes, at any stage.
Your mouth is a messenger. It is worth learning the language.
