# The Medications and Deficiencies Behind Burning Mouth
Two of the most common contributors to a burning mouth are also the two most commonly overlooked. Both are straightforward to check.
When someone arrives with a burning tongue and a stack of normal test results, there are two questions we ask that often have not been asked yet. What are you taking, and what are your levels?
Neither is exotic. Both are frequently skipped, because a burning mouth is treated as a dental problem, and medications and nutrient status are considered somebody else’s department.
The tissue lining your mouth turns over faster than almost any other tissue in your body. It is among the first places a deficiency becomes noticeable.
The ones most often implicated:
An important note for midlife women: absorption changes with age, and several common medications reduce B12 uptake. A diet that was sufficient at thirty may not be at fifty five.
Many widely prescribed medications list dry mouth, altered taste, or oral burning among their effects. The classes that come up most often:
Do not stop or change any medication based on this article. That decision belongs with the person who prescribed it, and stopping abruptly can cause real harm.
What is genuinely useful is bringing a complete list to your dental visit. Most patients have never been asked for one, and the connection sits there unmade.
Your dentist looks at your mouth. Your physician manages your prescriptions. Your symptom lives precisely in the gap between them, and nobody owns that gap.
It is the same structural problem behind so much of women’s oral health. The mouth is treated as a closed system, separate from hormones, nutrition, and everything else happening in the body.
It is not a closed system. It never was.
Our approach is to close that gap rather than send you back and forth across it:
We do not prescribe or adjust your medications. What we can do is notice the connection, tell you clearly, and make sure the right person hears about it.
If you have been told to live with a burning mouth, it is reasonable to ask whether these two things were ever properly examined.
Our Comprehensive Wellness Exam is ninety minutes precisely so that questions like these have room to be asked.
Bring your medication list. Bring your labs. Bring the questions no one has answered.
