# Can You Get a Filling While Pregnant?

Yes. Necessary dental treatment during pregnancy is generally considered safe, and leaving an active cavity untreated usually carries more risk than treating it.

That is the short answer, and we want it first, because most people asking this question are worried and have already been searching for a while.

The longer answer is about timing, materials, and one procedure we will not do while you are pregnant. At ELEV8 Beverly Hills Biological Dentistry, that last part is where we differ from most practices.

Why Waiting Is Usually the Riskier Choice

A cavity does not pause for nine months. It progresses, and pregnancy tends to accelerate it: more frequent eating, morning sickness exposing enamel to stomach acid, and hormonal changes that already have your gums inflamed.

A small filling now is a very different appointment from an emergency in your third trimester, when you are least comfortable and the options are narrower. Untreated decay can reach the nerve, and dental infection during pregnancy is a genuinely worse problem than dental treatment during pregnancy.

If you need a filling, the question is not whether but when and with what.

Timing By Trimester

First trimester. Urgent treatment goes ahead. Anything elective usually waits, mostly for your comfort during the weeks nausea and fatigue are typically at their worst.

Second trimester. The most comfortable window, and where we schedule most planned work. You are past the early weeks and not yet large enough for lying back to be uncomfortable.

Third trimester. Still safe, and we adjust. Appointments are kept shorter, and we position you slightly on your left side rather than flat on your back, since lying flat can compress a major blood vessel and make you lightheaded. Tell us the moment you feel uncomfortable and we will sit you up.

If you have an active problem in the first or third trimester, we treat it. Trimester guides the schedule for elective work, not for necessary care.

The Question Almost Nobody Asks: Which Material

This is where we differ, and it matters more during pregnancy than at any other time.

We do not place amalgam, the silver mercury-containing filling material, at any point. Composite and ceramic alternatives are our standard for every patient, pregnant or not.

We also take material selection further than most, using biocompatible materials and, where appropriate, biomimetic techniques that preserve more of your natural tooth.

If you have been offered an amalgam filling while pregnant, it is entirely reasonable to ask for an alternative.

The One Thing We Will Not Do

We do not remove existing mercury fillings during pregnancy or while you are breastfeeding.

This is worth being direct about. The removal process itself briefly increases mercury exposure. That is precisely why safe removal protocols exist, and it is also why elective removal is not appropriate during pregnancy or nursing.

We hold this standard under SMART protocol and we do not make exceptions for convenience. If someone offers to remove your amalgams while you are pregnant, please decline.

If mercury removal is something you want, the right window is before conception or after you have finished nursing. It is one of the better reasons to see us during the planning stage.

What About Temporary Fillings

Occasionally sensible, usually not necessary. A temporary filling can stabilize a tooth if you are very close to your due date and would rather complete the work afterward.

It is a deferral, not a solution, and it needs a plan attached. If it is offered simply because someone is uncertain about treating you while pregnant, ask why.

What We Do at ELEV8

  • Treatment planned around your trimester, in coordination with your OB or midwife
  • Mercury-free, biocompatible materials as the standard
  • Minimal imaging, and only where it changes what we would do
  • Shorter appointments and comfortable positioning later in pregnancy
  • No elective amalgam removal during pregnancy or nursing, without exception
