# A Trimester-by-Trimester Guide to Dental Care in Pregnancy

What to expect and what to do at each stage, from before conception through the months after. The short version: keep your appointments, and tell us where you are.

Most pregnancy dental advice is either alarmist or so cautious it amounts to doing nothing for nine months. Neither is right.

At ELEV8 Beverly Hills Biological Dentistry, this is the guide we walk our own patients through.

Before Conception, If You Can

This is the easiest version of all of it, and the one almost nobody plans for.

  • Complete any outstanding treatment while every option is still open
  • This is the window for mercury filling removal. We do not do it during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so if you want it, now is the time. See safe amalgam removal.
  • Get gum inflammation resolved before hormones amplify it
  • Establish a baseline so we can tell what pregnancy changed

If you are thinking about trying, come in. It is the single highest-value visit in this whole guide.

First Trimester: Weeks 1 to 12

What is happening. Hormones climbing fast. Morning sickness common. Gum changes beginning around month two.

What we do. Treat anything urgent. Defer elective work, mostly because you are unlikely to enjoy a long appointment during these weeks. Keep your routine cleaning.

What you do.

  • Tell us you are pregnant at the first appointment, or that you might be
  • After morning sickness, rinse with water or a baking soda solution. Do not brush for about thirty minutes. Stomach acid softens enamel and brushing straight away scrubs it away.
  • If nausea makes toothpaste unbearable, brush with water. Something is better than nothing.

Second Trimester: Weeks 13 to 27

What is happening. Usually the most comfortable stretch. Gum inflammation building steadily.

What we do. This is our preferred window for planned treatment. Fillings, crowns, anything that has been waiting.

What you do.

  • Book your cleaning here if you only manage one during pregnancy
  • Expect more bleeding when you brush, and keep brushing gently rather than backing off
  • Clean between your teeth daily
  • Mention any lump on the gum. It is usually a benign pregnancy granuloma.

Third Trimester: Weeks 28 to Birth

What is happening. Gum inflammation typically peaks around month eight. Lying flat becomes uncomfortable. Fatigue returns.

What we do. Shorter appointments. Necessary treatment still goes ahead.

The positioning detail nobody mentions. Lying flat on your back in the third trimester can compress the vena cava, the large vein returning blood to your heart, which makes some women dizzy or nauseated.

We position you tilted slightly onto your left side with support under your right hip, keep the chair less reclined, and build in breaks to sit up. Tell us the second you feel off and we will move you. You will not be interrupting anything.

What you do.

  • Book morning appointments if afternoons are harder
  • Eat before you come
  • Bring a cushion if a particular position helps you
  • Speak up early rather than pushing through

Postpartum: The Visit Almost Everyone Skips

What is happening. Hormones normalizing. Gum inflammation settling. A newborn consuming every waking hour.

Why it matters. Pregnancy gingivitis generally resolves. What does not automatically resolve is anything that progressed underneath while it was inflamed. A postpartum visit confirms which happened.

What you do.

  • Book at around three months, or whenever you can manage it
  • Still breastfeeding? Tell us. It keeps mercury removal off the table and shapes a few other choices.
  • Bring the baby. Genuinely. We would rather see you with a car seat in the room than not see you.

The Whole Guide in One Line

Keep your cleanings, treat what needs treating, save the elective work for the second trimester, and tell us where you are.

Our Comprehensive Wellness Exam is ninety minutes, at any stage.

Whether you are planning, expecting, or recovering, we build the plan around where you actually are.
