# Burning Mouth Syndrome: What Actually Helps
If your mouth burns and every test comes back normal, you are not imagining it and you are not alone. Here is what is actually going on.
Search for burning mouth syndrome and you will find a wall of miracle cures. That is not an accident. It is what happens when a real condition is poorly understood, rarely explained, and almost never taken seriously the first time someone mentions it.
At ELEV8 Beverly Hills Biological Dentistry, we see this most often in women in their forties and fifties. It is one of the more common reasons a patient arrives having already been told there is nothing wrong.
A scalded, tingling, or raw sensation on the tongue, lips, palate, or throughout the mouth. Usually there is nothing visible to see, which is precisely why it gets dismissed.
Most people also describe:
There is rarely a single cause, which is what makes it so frustrating and so often mishandled. The factors we look at most closely:
Hormonal change. The strong association with perimenopause and menopause is not a coincidence. Declining estrogen alters saliva, the tissue lining the mouth, and nerve sensitivity all at once.
Reduced saliva. Even when the mouth does not feel dry, saliva volume and composition may have changed enough to leave tissue unprotected.
Nutrient status. B12, iron, folate, and zinc all affect the health of the tissue lining the mouth.
Medications. Several common drug classes list dry mouth or altered taste as side effects.
Microbiome imbalance. A shift in oral bacteria or a fungal overgrowth can produce burning without anything obvious on examination.
Existing dental work. Occasionally a reaction to a material already in the mouth.
Read enough of them and a pattern emerges. Almost every person who says they cured it found one specific contributing factor and addressed it. A deficiency. A medication. A dry mouth nobody had measured.
That is not a cure in the way the headline suggests. It is a diagnosis that finally happened.
Which is the honest and genuinely more hopeful takeaway: the people who improve are usually the ones who stopped searching for a universal remedy and started identifying what was driving it in their own mouth.
Be cautious with anything promising a single fix. If a remedy worked for everyone, this would not be a syndrome.
We treat it as something to investigate rather than something to accept. Our approach includes:
We are looking for the contributing factors we can actually influence. Patients frequently tell us the most valuable part was simply having someone take the symptom seriously and look properly.
Burning mouth is not a character flaw, an anxiety symptom, or something you have to live with because one dentist could not see anything.
If your mouth burns and no one has been able to tell you why, that is the conversation our Comprehensive Wellness Exam is built for. Ninety minutes, imaging, oral biology, and a full health history, including where you are hormonally.
Bring the questions no one has answered. We would like to hear them.
